process stories
Something that I've learned about filmmaking is that a lot of it is about process. I used to think that the end product you were working toward was something already made, and you either succeeded or failed in faithfully transcribing the finished movie already playing in the metaphysical cineplex of your mind. (If that makes any sense, dear reader, continue on.) In other words: that there was only one "right" way, and if it's not that way, you've failed. But what I've learned is that the shape of the final film is inseperable from the process of how it was made. As a writer, I assumed that the toughest part was getting something satisfying out on the page, and then the work that followed was simply a matter of getting the pieces and putting them together. But the creative process that starts in writing a script morphs and continues on through the production and editing phases. Going through that whole journey and making the mental phase shift from concept, to shooting, to editing time and time again is the only way to really understand how the whole process works. And once you've got that, the easier it is to transcribe what you see in your head to what other people will see on the screen.
I bring this up because right now I'm in the midst of editing two shows, LIVE at 9 and the NATE KEMPER project. I'm finding that the creative choices I made in both the writing and shooting processes of both shows are, at points, coming into conflict with one another, and therefore make me reconsider a lot in the editing room. But this isn't something you can just sit and do. There's no single right way to go about it. There's trial and error. Results of an entire night's work that go out the window. You end up with a cut that you hate and you don't know where else to take it. It can be frustrating if you look at it like a project that comes in a box with "some assembly required." There's no right path--part of the work is finding the path, and that takes time. And patience. And learning about the craft and how you work through the process.

I know exactly what you mean, and I think because of this, when i start off by writting a script I keep in mind what my limitations will be, what I can do, and I apply that to the writting, and I feel like Im compromising even in the begenning phase.

By the by, Bracey said something in response to this post the other day that I found pretty interesting. He said that whereas my problem is starting with a finished product in mind and continually working to free up my creative process, he has the opposite problem. He starts vague and sees where the process takes him and has to find something specific by the end. I don't know, maybe he can come by and articulate it himself better than I can. I just thought it was interesting.
